Formula and methodology
Formula: Spans = ceil(fence length/post spacing); posts = spans + 1; face area = length × height; total cost = face area × board rate + posts × post rate + length × rails per fence × rail rate.
This planning estimate separates the visible fence area from the post and rail quantities so local prices can be entered without hiding a waste or labor assumption.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Fence length — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Fence height — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Post spacing — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Board or panel cost — currency/m²; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Post cost — currency/post; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Rail cost — currency/m; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Horizontal rails per fence — minimum 1; maximum 10
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Fence length | 20 |
| Fence height | 1.8 |
| Post spacing | 2.4 |
| Board or panel cost | 28 |
| Post cost | 18 |
| Rail cost | 7 |
| Horizontal rails per fence | 3 |
Estimated material cost is 1,608 currency units for 36 m² of face area, 10 posts, and 60 m of rails.
Assumptions and limits
- The fence is a straight run with evenly spaced posts and a constant height.
- Board or panel price is entered per square metre, while posts and rails use the stated local unit prices.
- Gates, corners, slopes, foundations, fasteners, labor, taxes, waste, delivery, and code requirements are outside the estimate.
