Formula and methodology
Formula: MHR = 220 − age or entered MHR; HRR = MHR − RHR; percentage range = MHR × intensity; Karvonen range = RHR + HRR × intensity; Zoladz reference = MHR − 50 to MHR − 40.
The page compares three common heart-rate range conventions instead of presenting one universal fat-loss number. The maximum-heart-rate estimate and percentage limits are editable so the visitor can see how assumptions change the result.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Age — years; minimum 1; maximum 120
- Resting heart rate — bpm; minimum 20; maximum 200
- Maximum-heart-rate method — 2 choices
- Entered maximum heart rate — bpm; minimum 40; maximum 260
- Lower intensity — %; minimum 1; maximum 99
- Upper intensity — %; minimum 1; maximum 99
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Age | 35 |
| Resting heart rate | 60 |
| Maximum-heart-rate method | age-estimate |
| Entered maximum heart rate | 185 |
| Lower intensity | 60 |
| Upper intensity | 80 |
MHR 185 bpm; percentage range 111–148 bpm; Karvonen range 135–160 bpm; Zoladz reference 135–145 bpm.
Assumptions and limits
- The age equation is a population estimate, not a measurement of an individual's maximum heart rate.
- Resting heart rate is entered as a beats-per-minute value measured under a consistent condition.
- The selected intensity interval is applied to both the percentage and Karvonen comparisons.
- The Zoladz reference uses the displayed 50–40 beat subtraction band.
- The calculator does not estimate calories, fat oxidation grams, body weight change, or fitness adaptation.
- Heart-rate response can be altered by medication, illness, heat, dehydration, stress, altitude, and exercise modality.
- The output is a training-planning comparison and not medical clearance.
- Any exercise plan should respect current symptoms, personal history, and qualified guidance when needed.
