Formula and methodology
Formula: For a current smoker, FTND score = time-to-first-cigarette points + forbidden-place points + most-important-cigarette point + cigarettes-per-day points + morning-frequency point + illness point; total range 0–10.
The calculator reproduces the published six-item scoring structure and keeps the non-scored current-smoking gate visible. It reports the score band as a screening description, never as a diagnosis or an instruction to start, stop, or change treatment.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.

Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Do you currently smoke? | yes |
| How soon after waking do you smoke? | time6to30 |
| Is it difficult to refrain where smoking is forbidden? | forbiddenYes |
| Which cigarette would you hate most to give up? | firstMorning |
| How many cigarettes per day? | cigarettes21to30 |
| Do you smoke more frequently during the first hours after waking? | morningYes |
| Do you smoke when you are so ill you stay in bed most of the day? | illnessNo |
FTND score = 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 0 = 7 points, in the high-dependence range.
Assumptions and limits
- The visitor answers the questions about current tobacco use honestly and for the same period of time.
- The six scored items and their response points follow the cited Fagerström scoring table.
- A person who marks current smoking as no is not assigned a dependence score by this page.
- The tool does not distinguish cigarettes from other nicotine products or model withdrawal symptoms.
- Score bands describe dependence intensity in a screening context and are not a diagnosis.
- Medication choice, dose, cessation planning, pregnancy, mental health, and medical history are outside the calculation.
- A qualified health professional should interpret a result when treatment, withdrawal, or safety is a concern.
