Formula and methodology
Formula: Pieces per row = floor(fabric width ÷ piece width). Rows = ceiling(piece count ÷ pieces per row). Row-layout length = rows × piece length. Purchase length = row-layout length × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100). An area-based comparison is piece count × piece width × piece length ÷ fabric width × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100).
The calculator uses a fixed-orientation row layout for rectangular pieces and shows an area-based comparison. It does not optimize pattern nesting, account for nap or grain direction, match plaids, or replace a pattern maker’s cutting plan.

Two pieces fit across each 44-unit width, so four pieces use two 30-unit rows; with 10% allowance, purchase about 66 length units.
Assumptions and limits
- All dimensions use the same length unit, such as inches or centimetres.
- The piece width is the across-fabric dimension in the selected orientation.
- Pieces are rectangular for the arithmetic layout.
- Pieces are placed in rows without interlocking or rotating them.
- Usable fabric width excludes selvedges or unusable edges when the visitor enters it that way.
- Waste percentage is an added purchasing allowance, not a measured cutting loss.
- Pattern nap, one-way print, grain, matching, hems, seams, and shrinkage are not inferred.
- The area comparison can be lower than the row layout and is not automatically safer.
- Actual fabric width and shrinkage depend on the material and supplier.
- A final cutting plan should be checked against the pattern and the fabric before purchase.
