Formula and methodology
Formula: Value=m×10^n; for a nonzero value, normalized significand=value/10^floor(log10(|value|)).
Exponential notation separates a coefficient from a power of ten. The calculator evaluates the entered pair and also normalizes the result so its nonzero significand lies from one up to, but not including, ten.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Mantissa — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
- Exponent of 10 — minimum -1000; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Mantissa | 4.2 |
| Exponent of 10 | -3 |
Value =0.0042; normalized form =4.2 × 10⁻³.
Assumptions and limits
- The exponent is a whole number in the displayed range.
- The result must remain finite in ordinary JavaScript number arithmetic.
- The normalized text is a presentation form; it does not change the underlying value.
