Formula and methodology
Formula: Transit depth δ = (Rp/R★)²; percentage depth = 100δ.
A central, fully contained transit blocks an area proportional to the square of the planet-to-star radius ratio. The result is a geometric screening estimate for the brightness dip.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Planet radius — same length unit; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Star radius — same length unit; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Planet radius | 1 |
| Star radius | 109.1 |
The estimated transit depth is about 0.0084%.
Assumptions and limits
- Planet and star radii use the same unit and the planet crosses the stellar disk centrally.
- The stellar surface is treated as uniformly bright with no limb darkening.
- Grazing geometry, stellar activity, atmospheric absorption, instrument noise, and orbital timing are not modeled.
