Formula and methodology
Formula: EUI = annual energy use ÷ gross floor area. The page also converts the result to kWh/m²/year and kBtu/ft²/year for comparison.
Energy use intensity normalizes a building’s annual energy by its floor area. The normalization makes different-sized buildings easier to compare, while the energy boundary, weather, occupancy, property type, and source-versus-site definition still determine what a comparison means.
