Formula and methodology
Formula: EPDS total = the ten scored item values added together, with a possible total from 0 to 30. The tenth item is displayed separately for safety follow-up.
This page is deliberately a scoring worksheet, not a reproduction of the EPDS questionnaire. Enter points already assigned using an approved language version and scoring key; the calculator adds them and flags that a self-harm response needs separate, prompt assessment.

Assumptions and limits
- The user has an approved EPDS form and has already applied its item scoring, including any reverse-scored items.
- Each of the ten item scores is an integer from 0 through 3.
- The total is a screening score and is not a diagnosis of depression or another mental-health condition.
- The tenth item is reviewed separately because safety cannot be inferred from the total alone.
- Cut points and referral pathways vary by setting, language, population, and local policy.
- The calculator does not administer the instrument, assess appearance or functioning, or evaluate risk factors.
- A positive or concerning screen needs compassionate clinical follow-up rather than self-treatment based on a number.
- Immediate danger, intent to self-harm, or inability to stay safe requires urgent local emergency or crisis support.
