Formula and methodology
Formula: Base XP = monster count × XP per monster; adjusted XP = base XP × encounter multiplier. Party thresholds equal the per-character threshold × party size.
This screen applies the 2014 fifth-edition encounter-building method to one party level, a party size, a monster count, and a common XP value. It includes the small-party and large-party multiplier adjustment described in that method, then compares adjusted XP with four party thresholds.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Number of characters — characters; minimum 1; maximum 12
- Character level — 20 choices
- Number of monsters — monsters; minimum 1; maximum 20
- XP per monster — XP; minimum 1; maximum 100000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Number of characters | 4 |
| Character level | 5 |
| Number of monsters | 2 |
| XP per monster | 700 |
Base XP is 1,400; the two-monster multiplier is 1.5×, giving 2,100 adjusted XP. For four level-5 characters this sits just above the medium threshold and below hard.
Assumptions and limits
- Every character is the selected level for the threshold calculation.
- Every monster is assigned the same entered XP value.
- The encounter uses the 2014 fifth-edition XP threshold and multiplier tables.
- One encounter is being screened; multipart encounter interactions are not simulated.
- A party of one or two moves to the next higher multiplier where the table allows it.
- A party of six or more moves to the next lower multiplier where the table allows it.
- The result does not account for monster abilities, terrain, tactics, resistances, or action economy.
- The displayed difficulty is a screening label, not a promise about danger or fun.
- The XP value is supplied by the visitor and is not looked up from a monster name.
- Another edition, supplement, or homebrew system may require different tables.
