Formula and methodology
Formula: Stroke volume = EDV − ESV; ejection fraction (%) = [(EDV − ESV) ÷ EDV] × 100.
The page calculates the volume ejected per beat and expresses it as a percentage of the end-diastolic volume. It checks that ESV is not greater than EDV and labels any clinical range as context rather than a diagnosis.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- End-diastolic volume (EDV) — mL; minimum 0.1; maximum 5000
- End-systolic volume (ESV) — mL; minimum 0; maximum 5000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| End-diastolic volume (EDV) | 120 |
| End-systolic volume (ESV) | 48 |
Stroke volume = 72 mL; ejection fraction = (72 ÷ 120) × 100 = 60%.
Assumptions and limits
- EDV and ESV refer to the same ventricle, beat or measurement context, and volume unit.
- EDV must be greater than zero and ESV must be between zero and EDV.
- The result is a mathematical estimate from entered volumes, not a direct measurement by this page.
- Different imaging methods and measurement assumptions can produce different volume and EF values.
- The displayed context uses common LVEF bands and is not a diagnosis of heart failure or contractility.
- A clinician must interpret EF with symptoms, imaging quality, loading conditions, rhythm, valves, and the full record.
- The calculator does not estimate right-ventricular function, cardiac output, prognosis, or treatment response.
- Urgent chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or blue lips require emergency local care rather than calculation.
