Formula and methodology
Formula: For counterflow Cr≠1, effectiveness=(1−e^(−NTU(1−Cr)))/(1−Cr×e^(−NTU(1−Cr))); for Cr=1, effectiveness=NTU/(1+NTU).
The standard counterflow NTU relation reports a dimensionless effectiveness without pretending to know exchanger fouling, leakage, or measured temperatures.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Number of transfer units — minimum 0; maximum 1000
- Heat-capacity ratio Cr — minimum 0; maximum 1
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Number of transfer units | 2 |
| Heat-capacity ratio Cr | 0.5 |
Effectiveness ≈0.7746.
Assumptions and limits
- NTU is nonnegative and the heat-capacity ratio is between zero and one.
- The counterflow arrangement and constant-property model apply.
- Fouling, phase change, axial conduction, leakage, maldistribution, and pressure drop are not modeled.
