Formula and methodology
Formula: For ns/np: S=0.35(same group)+0.85(n−1)+1.00(lower); for nd/nf: S=0.35(same group)+1.00(one shell below + lower); Zeff=Z−S.
The calculator exposes the grouped electron counts used in the selected Slater-rule approximation instead of pretending to infer an electron configuration from an element name.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Nuclear charge Z — minimum 1; maximum 200
- Target principal shell n — minimum 1; maximum 7
- Target orbital group — 2 choices
- Other electrons in target group — minimum 0; maximum 14
- Electrons in n−1 shell — minimum 0; maximum 32
- Electrons in lower shells/groups — minimum 0; maximum 200
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Nuclear charge Z | 17 |
| Target principal shell n | 3 |
| Target orbital group | sp |
| Other electrons in target group | 7 |
| Electrons in n−1 shell | 8 |
| Electrons in lower shells/groups | 2 |
Shielding constant S = 11.25 and estimated Zeff = 5.75.
Assumptions and limits
- Electron counts are whole numbers and the target group excludes the electron being evaluated.
- The coefficients are the selected simplified Slater-rule convention; alternate grouping conventions can give different estimates.
- This is an approximate screening model, not a quantum-chemical calculation or an orbital-energy prediction.
