Formula and methodology
Formula: log10(E in joules) = 5.24 + 1.44Mw; energy ratio = 10^(1.44 × (Mw − comparison Mw)); amplitude ratio = 10^(Mw − comparison Mw).
Magnitude and intensity answer different questions: magnitude describes the size at the source, while intensity varies by location. This page uses the USGS approximate moment-magnitude energy relation for a scale comparison and deliberately does not turn the number into a local shaking, damage, or hazard forecast.
