Formula and methodology
Formula: ERA = earned runs x 27 / recorded outs, equivalent to earned runs x 9 / innings pitched.
ERA scales earned runs to a nine-inning basis. Entering recorded outs makes partial innings explicit and avoids ambiguous decimal inning notation.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Earned runs — minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- Outs recorded — Three recorded outs equal one inning for this calculation.; minimum 1; maximum 3000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Earned runs | 4 |
| Outs recorded | 27 |

Assumptions and limits
- Earned runs and outs are whole-number totals from the same pitching sample.
- Three outs are treated as one inning.
