Formula and methodology
Formula: DBE = C − (H + X)/2 + N/2 + 1, where X is the total number of halogen atoms; oxygen and sulfur do not appear.
A degree of unsaturation counts rings and pi-bond equivalents in a typical neutral closed-shell organic formula. One ring or one double bond contributes one DBE, while a triple bond contributes two.
