Formula and methodology
Formula: Round the amount to the selected currency exponent, split absolute minor units into major and minor values, write each integer in English words, then apply the selected currency labels and sign.
This is a readable English formatter rather than a localized legal-document generator. It supports common international currencies and their configured minor-unit conventions, while making the selected currency and rounding step visible.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Numeric amount — selected currency; minimum -1000000000000; maximum 1000000000000
- Currency — 16 choices
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Numeric amount | 1234.56 |
| Currency | USD |
one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents
Assumptions and limits
- The amount is interpreted using the selected ISO-style three-letter currency code and the page’s displayed currency convention.
- The formatter writes English words only; it does not translate the amount into the interface language.
- The amount is rounded to the configured number of fractional digits before words are generated.
- Negative values are prefixed with the word minus.
- The supported currency list is deliberately finite and includes the major/minor labels shown in the selector.
- Japanese yen is configured with no minor unit, while the other listed currencies use their displayed fractional-unit convention.
- Spelling, punctuation, cheque protections, tax wording, invoice rules, and legal requirements vary by country and institution.
- Confirm formal wording with the receiving bank, court, tax authority, employer, or document system before relying on it.
