Formula and methodology
Formula: Lower remaining years = max(lower lifespan − current age, 0). Upper remaining years = max(upper lifespan − current age, 0). Midpoint = (lower lifespan + upper lifespan) ÷ 2; progress percentages compare current age with each bound.
The calculator turns an explicit lifespan range into a planning range. It does not infer breed, size, disease, care quality, or an individual dog’s survival time, and it does not replace veterinary advice.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Current dog age — years; minimum 0; maximum 100
- Lower lifespan assumption — years; minimum 1; maximum 100
- Upper lifespan assumption — years; minimum 1; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Current dog age | 5 |
| Lower lifespan assumption | 8 |
| Upper lifespan assumption | 16 |
At 5 years old, the simple range is 3 to 11 remaining years, with a 12-year midpoint assumption.
Assumptions and limits
- Current age and lifespan bounds use the same year unit.
- The lower lifespan assumption must not exceed the upper assumption.
- A remaining-year result is floored at zero after the entered age reaches a bound.
- The midpoint is a simple arithmetic midpoint, not a population median or survival model.
- The lifespan range is supplied by the visitor and can be changed for breed or local evidence.
- Breed, body size, genetics, disease, prevention, environment, and accidents are not modeled.
- The result is a planning estimate and never predicts an individual death date.
- A senior, ill, painful, or suddenly changed dog still needs qualified veterinary assessment.
- Fractional age is accepted so a visitor can model months as a decimal year.
- The calculator does not convert dog years to human years; that is a separate convention.
