Formula and methodology
Formula: Recommended internal length = body length + length clearance; recommended internal height = standing height + height clearance; recommended internal width = turning diameter + width clearance; floor area = length × width; internal volume = length × width × height.
Humane-society guidance describes a crate as large enough for a dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. This planner converts those observable requirements into dimensions using the visitor's own measurements and clearances. It does not select a brand, replace a divider, or decide how long a dog should be crated.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Dog body length — selected unit; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Standing height — selected unit; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Space needed to turn around — selected unit; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Length clearance — selected unit; minimum 0; maximum 100000
- Height clearance — selected unit; minimum 0; maximum 100000
- Width clearance — selected unit; minimum 0; maximum 100000
- Measurement unit — 2 choices
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Dog body length | 70 |
| Standing height | 60 |
| Space needed to turn around | 75 |
| Length clearance | 5 |
| Height clearance | 5 |
| Width clearance | 5 |
| Measurement unit | cm |
The planning dimensions are 75 cm long × 80 cm wide × 65 cm high, with a 6,000 cm² floor area and 390,000 cm³ internal volume.
Assumptions and limits
- Measurements describe the dog at the size the crate must accommodate, including an expected adult size for a growing puppy when appropriate.
- Turning diameter is used as a practical width proxy; the dog must still be able to lie down and reposition comfortably.
- Clearances are explicit planning inputs rather than a universal legal or manufacturer standard.
- Dimensions are internal clear dimensions; wall thickness, tray shape, door hardware, bedding, and divider placement are not included.
- A crate is not a treatment for anxiety and the result does not recommend duration, confinement, transport approval, or behavior training.
- Observe the individual animal and follow humane-care guidance before using a crate.
