Formula and methodology
Formula: Copper value = cp + 10sp + 50ep + 100gp + 1,000pp; gold equivalent = copper value ÷ 100.
The calculator uses the 2014 fifth-edition standard exchange table to combine mixed denominations. It preserves the total value exactly in copper pieces, then shows a greedy pp/gp/sp/cp purse for an easy-to-read normalized view.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Copper pieces (cp) — cp; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- Silver pieces (sp) — sp; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- Electrum pieces (ep) — ep; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- Gold pieces (gp) — gp; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- Platinum pieces (pp) — pp; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Copper pieces (cp) | 37 |
| Silver pieces (sp) | 12 |
| Electrum pieces (ep) | 3 |
| Gold pieces (gp) | 8 |
| Platinum pieces (pp) | 1 |
The purse is worth 2,107 cp, or 21.07 gp, and normalizes to 2 pp, 1 gp, 0 sp, 7 cp.
Assumptions and limits
- The inputs are whole coins from the 2014 fifth-edition standard exchange table.
- One silver piece equals ten copper pieces.
- One electrum piece equals five silver pieces or fifty copper pieces.
- One gold piece equals ten silver pieces or one hundred copper pieces.
- One platinum piece equals ten gold pieces or one thousand copper pieces.
- Normalization is a display choice and removes electrum from the displayed remainder.
- The result is game currency, not a real-world exchange rate or market value.
- Only the entered coin denominations are included; gems, trade goods, notes, and barter are excluded.
- The tool does not calculate encumbrance, coin weight, item prices, or treasure-generation rules.
- Edition-specific rules or a game master's house rules may use different values.
