Formula and methodology
Formula: Dilution factor = stock concentration / target concentration; target fraction of stock = 1 / dilution factor.
The dilution factor compares the starting concentration with the desired final concentration. A factor of five means the target is one-fifth of the stock concentration; the factor alone does not determine a pipetted volume until a final volume is also chosen.
