Formula and methodology
Formula: degrees = sign × floor(|d|); minutes = floor((|d|-degrees)×60); seconds = remainder×60; total arcseconds = d×3600.
The converter separates the sign from the absolute angular components, so west/south or clockwise values remain unambiguous when the signed decimal degree is negative.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Decimal degrees — °; minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Decimal degrees | 12.3456 |
12.3456° = 12° 20′ 44.16″; total: 44,444.16 arcseconds.
Assumptions and limits
- The input is an angle in decimal degrees; no latitude/longitude datum or map projection is inferred.
- Minutes and seconds are angular arcminutes and arcseconds, not time units.
- The degree component carries the sign while minutes and seconds are displayed as nonnegative components.
