Formula and methodology
Formula: Pay every minimum, then direct remaining monthly cash to the active debt with the highest APR; repeat after each payoff.
The simulation preserves the entered minimums, adds monthly interest, and reports the months and interest under an avalanche order.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract

- Debt 2 balance — currency; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Debt 2 APR — %; minimum 0; maximum 1000
- Debt 2 minimum payment — currency; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Debt 3 balance — currency; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000

Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Debt 1 balance | 3000 |
| Debt 1 APR | 24 |
| Debt 1 minimum payment | 75 |
| Debt 2 balance | 6000 |
| Debt 2 APR | 12 |
| Debt 2 minimum payment | 120 |
| Debt 3 balance | 1000 |
| Debt 3 APR | 18 |
| Debt 3 minimum payment | 30 |
| Extra monthly payment | 200 |
The simulation targets Debt 1 first because it has the highest APR.
Assumptions and limits
- APR is converted to a simple monthly rate by dividing by twelve.
- Minimum payments and extra payment remain constant until a debt is cleared, then freed cash is rolled into the next target.
- Fees, new borrowing, promotional rates, taxes, and creditor-specific payment rules are excluded.
