Formula and methodology
Formula: r = annualRate / 1200; n = -ln(1 - balance x r / monthlyPayment) / ln(1 + r). At zero rate, n = balance / monthlyPayment. Round n up to whole payments and reduce the final payment to the amount due.
The payoff count includes the final payment month. Each monthly-end payment first covers interest on the outstanding balance and then reduces principal. A zero balance takes zero payments. If payment is no greater than interest, the tool returns an error rather than inventing a payoff date.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Current debt balance — minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Fixed monthly payment — Must exceed the first month's interest when a balance remains.; minimum 0.01; maximum 1000000000000
- Nominal annual interest rate — %; Monthly interest rate = annual percentage / 1200; no daily interest convention is assumed.; minimum 0; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Current debt balance | 25000 |
| Fixed monthly payment | 1200 |
| Nominal annual interest rate | 7 |
Payoff: 23 months; total interest: 1732.97; final payment: 332.97.
Assumptions and limits
- The nominal annual rate is divided by 12, with a constant monthly-end payment and no new borrowing, fees, or rate changes.
- Payments that do not reduce principal, or would require more than 100 years, are rejected; calculations are bounded to 1200 monthly payments.
- Use one consistent currency. Internal calculations are unrounded and the last payment is only the remaining balance plus that month's interest.
