Formula and methodology
Formula: Power ratio: dB = 10 log₁₀(P/P₀); amplitude ratio: dB = 20 log₁₀(A/A₀).
Decibels express a logarithmic ratio, so the same measured and reference values produce different results depending on whether they represent power or an amplitude-like quantity such as voltage under the appropriate impedance assumptions. The tool keeps the reference visible and also reports the ordinary ratio and percentage change.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Quantity type — 2 choices
- Measured value — input units; minimum 1.0E-12; maximum 1.0E+300
- Reference value — input units; minimum 1.0E-12; maximum 1.0E+300
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Quantity type | power |
| Measured value | 100 |
| Reference value | 10 |
A power ratio of 10:1 is 10 dB; the measured value is 900% above the reference.
Assumptions and limits
- Measured and reference values are positive magnitudes in the same units.
- The amplitude mode is used only when the physical quantity follows the 20-log relationship to power, commonly with matched or clearly defined impedance conditions.
- The result is relative to the entered reference; labels such as dBW or dBV require a specified absolute reference that this page does not assume.
