Formula and methodology
Formula: DASI score = the weights of the twelve activities marked achievable added together. Predicted METs = [(DASI score × 0.43) + 9.6] ÷ 3.5; the maximum score is 58.2.
DASI is a structured self-reported functional-capacity instrument. This page accepts already-understood activity responses and adds the published weights, then displays the commonly used MET conversion as an estimate rather than a measured exercise result.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.

Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Self-care activities marked achievable | yes |
| Walking indoors marked achievable | yes |
| Walking one or two blocks on level ground marked achievable | yes |
| Climbing stairs or a hill marked achievable | yes |
| Running a short distance marked achievable | no |
| Light household work marked achievable | yes |
| Moderate household work or shopping marked achievable | yes |
| Heavy work or moving furniture marked achievable | no |
| Yardwork marked achievable | no |
| Sexual activity marked achievable | no |
| Moderate recreation marked achievable | no |
| Strenuous sport marked achievable | no |
DASI = 2.75 + 1.75 + 2.75 + 5.50 + 2.70 + 3.50 = 18.95 points; predicted METs ≈ 5.07.
Assumptions and limits
- The responses come from the approved DASI instrument and the user’s own functional history.
- A marked achievable activity contributes its specified weight; an unachievable activity contributes zero.
- The twelve weights sum to a maximum DASI score of 58.2 points.
- The displayed MET value uses the published linear conversion from score to estimated peak oxygen-use equivalent.
- The estimate is not measured VO₂ peak and does not establish exercise clearance.
- Pain, dyspnoea, fatigue, frailty, cognition, language, and assistance needs can affect responses.
- The calculator does not change the instrument’s administration, ask follow-up questions, or interpret perioperative risk by itself.
- Symptoms or a change in exercise tolerance need discussion with the responsible clinical team.
