Formula and methodology
Formula: Head loss=f×(length/diameter)×speed²/(2×gravity); pressure loss=fluid density×gravity×head loss.
The Darcy-Weisbach relationship keeps the selected friction factor visible rather than hiding pipe roughness and Reynolds-number decisions inside the page.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Darcy friction factor — minimum 0; maximum 1
- Pipe length — minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Pipe diameter — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Mean flow speed — minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Fluid density — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Gravitational acceleration — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Darcy friction factor | 0.02 |
| Pipe length | 100 |
| Pipe diameter | 0.1 |
| Mean flow speed | 2 |
| Fluid density | 1000 |
| Gravitational acceleration | 9.80665 |
Head loss ≈4.0777 m; pressure loss ≈40,000 Pa.
Assumptions and limits
- The friction factor is already selected for the pipe and flow condition.
- Diameter, length, speed, density, and gravity use compatible units.
- Fittings, elevation change, entrance effects, multiphase flow, and pump operation are not modeled.
