Formula and methodology
Formula: P ≈ mgv·grade + Crr·mgv + ½ρCdAv³, with grade entered as a decimal.
The estimate adds gravitational, rolling, and aerodynamic power at steady speed.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Rider and bicycle mass — kg; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Speed — m/s; minimum 0; maximum 100
- Road grade — %; minimum -100; maximum 100
- Rolling-resistance coefficient — minimum 0; maximum 1
- Aerodynamic drag coefficient — minimum 0; maximum 10
- Frontal area — m²; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100
- Air density — kg/m³; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 10
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Rider and bicycle mass | 80 |
| Speed | 10 |
| Road grade | 0 |
| Rolling-resistance coefficient | 0.005 |
| Aerodynamic drag coefficient | 0.9 |
| Frontal area | 0.5 |
| Air density | 1.225 |
Aerodynamic and rolling power ≈ 314.9 W.
Assumptions and limits
- Speed is metres per second and grade is percent converted to a decimal.
- The rider maintains constant speed on a straight route.
- Drivetrain losses, wind, acceleration, bearing friction, and changing terrain are not modeled.
