Formula and methodology
Formula: Relative speed = breakaway speed − peloton speed; gap gained = relative speed × duration; projected gap = initial gap + gap gained; time to a larger target gap = (target gap − initial gap) ÷ relative speed when the target is not already reached and relative speed is positive.
The physical-gap model isolates one useful question: how much separation does a constant speed difference create? It is not a race simulator and deliberately leaves terrain, wind, drafting, corners, attacks, and speed changes outside the arithmetic.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Current physical gap — m; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- Target physical gap — m; minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
- Breakaway average speed — km/h; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 300
- Peloton average speed — km/h; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 300
- Analysis duration — minutes; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Current physical gap | 100 |
| Target physical gap | 500 |
| Breakaway average speed | 45 |
| Peloton average speed | 42 |
| Analysis duration | 30 |
A 3 km/h advantage gains 1,500 m in 30 minutes, moving a 100 m gap to about 1,600 m; the 500 m target would be reached in about 8 minutes.
Assumptions and limits
- Both speeds are average speeds over the same road segment and use kilometres per hour.
- The gap is treated as a physical distance, not an official time gap shown by race timing equipment.
- The breakaway and peloton maintain constant speeds for the selected horizon.
- Drafting, terrain, wind, road gradient, cornering, accelerations, and regrouping are not modeled.
- If the peloton is at least as fast as the breakaway, the model does not claim that a larger target gap will be reached.
- Use race timing and live information for decisions during an actual event; this is a scenario calculator.
