Formula and methodology
Formula: Total units = units per batch × batches. Total elapsed minutes = batches × setup time + (total units × run time per unit ÷ parallel stations) + changeovers × changeover time + transfer time. Average cycle time = total elapsed ÷ total units; throughput = total units ÷ total elapsed × 60.
This worksheet defines cycle time as the average elapsed production time per unit under explicit batch and parallel-station assumptions. It is not a universal industrial-engineering standard: real lines can have bottlenecks, queues, downtime, rejects, labor constraints, and unbalanced stations.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Setup time per batch — minutes; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Run time per unit — minutes/unit; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Units per batch — units; minimum 1; maximum 100000000
- Number of batches — batches; minimum 1; maximum 1000000
- Changeovers — events; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Time per changeover — minutes; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Balanced parallel stations — stations; minimum 1; maximum 1000000
- Other transfer or handoff time — minutes; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Setup time per batch | 15 |
| Run time per unit | 2 |
| Units per batch | 50 |
| Number of batches | 4 |
| Changeovers | 3 |
| Time per changeover | 10 |
| Balanced parallel stations | 2 |
| Other transfer or handoff time | 5 |
200 units take 295 planning minutes; average cycle time is 1.475 minutes per unit and throughput is about 40.68 units per hour.
Assumptions and limits
- All time inputs use the same minute unit.
- Run time is treated as a repeatable average per unit.
- Setup time is incurred once for each batch.
- Parallel stations divide run time evenly as a planning approximation.
- Changeovers are entered explicitly and are not inferred from product mix.
- Transfer time is a single additional planning allowance.
- The model does not simulate queues, failures, breaks, rejects, or rework.
- Throughput is an arithmetic rate, not a guaranteed production commitment.
- Batch sizes and station counts must describe the same planning horizon.
- A production decision still needs measured time studies and local process review.
