Formula and methodology
Formula: Required finished width = (window width + overlap)×fullness; panel count = ceil(required finished width/panel cut width); total cut width = panel count×panel cut width; fabric area = total cut width×drop.
The estimate keeps fullness and center overlap visible. It rounds the number of equal-width panels upward, then reports the material area implied by those whole panels and their entered cut drop.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Window or rod width — cm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Center overlap allowance — cm; minimum 0; maximum 100000
- Fullness ratio — minimum 1; maximum 10
- Usable cut width per panel — cm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Cut drop per panel — cm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Window or rod width | 200 |
| Center overlap allowance | 20 |
| Fullness ratio | 2 |
| Usable cut width per panel | 140 |
| Cut drop per panel | 240 |
Required finished width is 440 cm, so four 140 cm panels are needed; the ideal cut area is 13.44 m².
Assumptions and limits
- The window or rod width is the span to cover and the entered overlap is added once before fullness is applied.
- Every panel has the same usable cut width and drop; hems, headers, pattern matching, shrinkage, and selvage are not modeled.
- Fullness is a planning ratio, not a universal sewing standard; choose it for the fabric and heading style being used.
- The result estimates fabric quantity and does not determine mounting hardware, fit, privacy, or light control.
