Formula and methodology
Formula: Estimated crude protein mass = nitrogen mass × conversion factor; crude protein percentage = estimated protein mass/sample mass × 100.
The factor is an explicit input because different foods and proteins can use different nitrogen-to-protein conventions.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Measured nitrogen — g; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Sample mass — g; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Nitrogen-to-protein factor — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Measured nitrogen | 2.4 |
| Sample mass | 100 |
| Nitrogen-to-protein factor | 6.25 |
Estimated crude protein = 15 g, or 15% of the sample.
Assumptions and limits
- The nitrogen measurement and sample mass use the same sample boundary and grams.
- The selected factor is appropriate for the material being analyzed; 6.25 is a common general convention, not a universal truth.
- Non-protein nitrogen, method recovery, moisture basis, laboratory uncertainty, and nutritional advice are not modeled.
