Formula and methodology
Formula: Crosswind = wind speed × sin(angle); runway-aligned component = wind speed × cos(angle); positive aligned component is headwind and negative aligned component is tailwind.
The page resolves one wind vector into components parallel and perpendicular to a runway or travel direction. It reports the same components in metres per second, knots, and kilometres per hour so the answer is useful internationally, but it does not set an aircraft limit or decide whether a runway is usable.

A 20-knot wind at 60° gives about 17.321 knots crosswind and 10 knots headwind.
Assumptions and limits
- The angle is the smaller direction difference from the runway axis and is between 0° and 180°.
- Zero degrees means wind aligned with the chosen direction; 90° means a pure crosswind.
- The wind is treated as steady and uniform during the calculation.
- The aligned component is positive for headwind and negative for tailwind under the chosen direction convention.
- The result is a vector decomposition, not a local weather observation or a gust forecast.
- Aircraft, vehicle, runway-surface, pilot, tire, terrain, and operational limits are not modeled.
- Use current official weather, aircraft or vehicle guidance, and a qualified decision-maker for safety-critical operations.
