Formula and methodology
Formula: Stitched width = stitches wide/fabric count; stitched height = stitches high/fabric count; cut width = stitched width + 2×margin; cut height = stitched height + 2×margin; fabric area = cut width×cut height.
Fabric count states how many stitches occupy one inch. Dividing the design stitch dimensions by that count gives the stitched area; adding the same visible margin on both sides produces a simple cut-size estimate.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Stitches wide — stitches; minimum 1; maximum 1000000
- Stitches high — stitches; minimum 1; maximum 1000000
- Fabric count — stitches/in; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Margin on each side — in; minimum 0; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Stitches wide | 120 |
| Stitches high | 90 |
| Fabric count | 14 |
| Margin on each side | 3 |
The stitched design is about 8.57 × 6.43 in; with a 3 in margin on every side, the cut estimate is 14.57 × 12.43 in.
Assumptions and limits
- Fabric count is expressed as stitches per inch and is treated as uniform in both directions.
- The design is rectangular and the margin is the same on the left, right, top, and bottom.
- Frame overlap, seam allowance, fabric grain, distortion, waste, and finishing method are not modeled.
- A real project should compare the cut size with the available fabric width and the chosen finishing or framing method.
