Formula and methodology
Formula: Crawl ratio = first-gear ratio × transfer-case low ratio × final-drive ratio.
The ratio shows the total ideal speed reduction between the engine and driven axle in the selected lowest gear combination.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- First-gear ratio — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Transfer-case low ratio — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Final-drive ratio — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| First-gear ratio | 4 |
| Transfer-case low ratio | 2.72 |
| Final-drive ratio | 4.1 |
Crawl ratio is 44.608:1.
Assumptions and limits
- Each entered ratio is a positive reduction ratio expressed as input speed divided by output speed.
- The three reductions are in series and no overdrive, tire slip, or alternate gear is included.
- Traction, tire diameter, axle strength, clutch behavior, and vehicle safety are not modeled.
