Formula and methodology
Formula: Δx = x₂-x₁; Δy = y₂-y₁; d = √(Δx²+Δy²); midpoint = ((x₁+x₂)/2,(y₁+y₂)/2).
The distance is the hypotenuse of the right triangle formed by the horizontal and vertical coordinate changes. The midpoint averages each coordinate independently.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Point 1 x — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
- Point 1 y — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
- Point 2 x — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
- Point 2 y — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Point 1 x | 1 |
| Point 1 y | 2 |
| Point 2 x | 7 |
| Point 2 y | 10 |
Distance: 10 units; midpoint: (4, 6).
Assumptions and limits
- The inputs are points in a flat two-dimensional Cartesian system.
- The distance uses the same unit as the coordinate axes; the midpoint has the same coordinate unit.
- Latitude/longitude, map projections, and elevation are not included.
