Formula and methodology
Formula: Converted length = value * meters per source unit / meters per target unit.
A common meter basis makes every pair reciprocal and avoids mismatched rounded forward and reverse factors. One inch is exactly 0.0254 meter, one international foot is 0.3048 meter, one statute mile is 1609.344 meters, and one nautical mile is 1852 meters. The conversion factor is reported alongside the converted value.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Length — minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- From unit — 9 choices
- To unit — 9 choices
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Length | 1 |
| From unit | mi |
| To unit | km |
1.609344 km
Assumptions and limits
- Uses international feet and statute miles, not retired U.S. survey feet or survey miles.
- Length is a nonnegative magnitude. Factors are exact definitions evaluated with floating-point arithmetic.
- The existing convert ID is retained for this length tool. It does not provide currency rates or the old mixed converter's input format.
