Formula and methodology
Formula: For y = kxⁿ, k = y ÷ xⁿ and target y = k × target xⁿ.
A variation model separates the known scale relationship from the target input. The power field keeps ordinary direct variation (n = 1) and higher-power relationships visible without hiding the exponent in the result.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Known x value — x units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Known y value — y units; minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
- Target x value — x units; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Power of x — power; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 20
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Known x value | 8 |
| Known y value | 20 |
| Target x value | 12 |
| Power of x | 1 |
For y = kx, the constant is k = 2.5 and y at x = 12 is 30.
Assumptions and limits
- The entered values follow one direct or power-variation model with no additive intercept.
- Known and target x values are positive so fractional powers remain real and unambiguous.
- The result extrapolates the stated relationship; it does not establish that a real process remains proportional outside the measured range.
