Formula and methodology
Formula: r = annualRate / 1200; n = 12 x years; final balance = principal x (1 + r)^n; compound interest = final balance - principal.
Unlike simple interest, each month's interest stays in the balance and earns interest in later months. This tool models only the initial lump sum; use Monthly Savings Growth for recurring deposits. The yearly table includes a final partial-year checkpoint when needed.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Initial principal — minimum 0; maximum 1000000000000
- Nominal annual interest rate — %; Monthly rate = annual percentage / 1200, not an effective annual yield.; minimum 0; maximum 100
- Growth horizon — years; Whole months only. A partial final year is shown in the table; zero returns the principal.; minimum 0; maximum 100
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Initial principal | 10000 |
| Nominal annual interest rate | 6 |
| Growth horizon | 10 |
Final balance: 18193.97; compound interest: 8193.97.
Assumptions and limits
- Interest compounds monthly using one constant nominal annual rate divided by 12; no additional contributions or withdrawals occur.
- No taxes, fees, inflation adjustment, live product rate, or guaranteed future return is implied; amounts use one consistent currency.
- The horizon contains whole months and is limited to zero through 100 years. At zero rate, the principal remains unchanged.
