Formula and methodology
Formula: Round each input to the selected unit, perform the selected operation on the rounded values, and compare that estimate with the exact operation on the original values.
Compatible numbers are deliberately easy approximations, not replacement values that claim extra precision. The page shows the rounded inputs, exact result, estimate, absolute error, and relative error so a visitor can decide whether the shortcut is adequate for a quick check or budget estimate.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Arithmetic operation — 4 choices
- Numbers — Enter 2–10 numbers; division uses exactly two.
- Rounding unit — 4 choices
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Arithmetic operation | add |
| Numbers | 458, 673 |
| Rounding unit | 10 |
458+673 = 1,131 exactly; compatible numbers 460+670 give an estimate of 1,130 with an absolute error of 1.
Assumptions and limits
- Rounding uses nearest-unit half-up behavior for the entered finite numbers.
- Addition, subtraction, and multiplication accept 2–10 numbers; division accepts a dividend and divisor.
- An estimate with a zero rounded divisor is rejected because it cannot produce a meaningful division result.
