Formula and methodology
Formula: P1*V1/T1 = P2*V2/T2; solve for the selected variable.
Boyle's and Charles's laws combined for a fixed amount of gas. Temperatures must be absolute (kelvin); pressures and volumes need only be mutually consistent units.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Solve for — 3 choices
- Initial pressure (P1) — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Initial volume (V1) — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Initial temperature (T1) — K; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Final pressure (P2) — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Final volume (V2) — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Final temperature (T2) — K; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Solve for | volume2 |
| Initial pressure (P1) | 100 |
| Initial volume (V1) | 2 |
| Initial temperature (T1) | 300 |
| Final pressure (P2) | 200 |
| Final volume (V2) | 1 |
| Final temperature (T2) | 300 |
Final volume: 1.
Assumptions and limits
- Fixed moles of ideal gas.
- Temperatures in kelvin, both positive.
- P1/P2 share one unit; V1/V2 share one unit.
