Formula and methodology
Formula: Concentrate volume = finished volume×concentrate fraction; brew water = concentrate volume÷yield fraction; coffee mass = brew water÷water-to-coffee ratio; dilution water = finished volume−concentrate volume.
Cold-brew recipes often separate a strong brewed concentrate from the final drink. This calculator makes both the coffee-to-water ratio and the liquid retained by the grounds explicit, then reserves the remaining finished volume for dilution. It is a scaling model, not a promise of a particular taste or extraction.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Finished ready-to-drink volume — L; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Concentrate fraction of finished volume — fraction; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 0.999999
- Brew-water to coffee ratio — water:coffee; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000
- Liquid yield after grounds — fraction; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Finished ready-to-drink volume | 2 |
| Concentrate fraction of finished volume | 0.5 |
| Brew-water to coffee ratio | 5 |
| Liquid yield after grounds | 0.8 |
Plan 1 L concentrate, 1.25 L brew water, about 250 g coffee, and 1 L dilution water.
Assumptions and limits
- The finished volume is the volume after brewing and dilution.
- Concentrate fraction is the portion of that finished volume supplied by brewed concentrate; the remainder is dilution water.
- Yield fraction is the brewed liquid recovered divided by the water added to the grounds.
- Coffee mass and water volume are treated as numerically comparable through the entered ratio, a common brewing-planning convention.
- Grind, steep time, temperature, filtration, ice, retention, and dissolved solids are not inferred.
- The ratio is an editable recipe choice rather than a universal cold-brew standard.
- For a food-service batch, measure actual recovered liquid and adjust the next batch.
