Formula and methodology
Formula: Pooled SD = √(((n₁−1)s₁²+(n₂−1)s₂²)/(n₁+n₂−2)); d = (mean₁−mean₂)/pooled SD.
The result standardizes the difference using the two groups' pooled sample variability and preserves its sign according to group order.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Group 1 mean — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
- Group 1 sample SD — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Group 1 sample size — minimum 2; maximum 1000000
- Group 2 mean — minimum -1000000000; maximum 1000000000
- Group 2 sample SD — minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000000
- Group 2 sample size — minimum 2; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Group 1 mean | 80 |
| Group 1 sample SD | 10 |
| Group 1 sample size | 30 |
| Group 2 mean | 75 |
| Group 2 sample SD | 8 |
| Group 2 sample size | 25 |
Pooled SD ≈ 9.142; Cohen's d ≈ 0.547.
Assumptions and limits
- The groups are independent and sample standard deviations use n−1 degrees of freedom.
- Both standard deviations are positive and sample sizes are whole numbers of at least two.
- Cohen's d is descriptive; no significance test, confidence interval, causality, or substantive threshold is inferred.
