Formula and methodology
Formula: Coffee mass in kg = grams/1000; material footprint = coffee kg×(production + transport + packaging factors)×(1+waste/100); brewing footprint = electricity kWh×electricity factor; total = material footprint + brewing footprint; per serving = total/servings.
Footprint results are highly dependent on the boundary and the factors chosen. This page therefore exposes every factor instead of presenting one supposedly universal coffee number. Enter a documented factor set for the origin, package, electricity mix, and preparation you are comparing, then use the result as a scenario estimate with its assumptions attached.

Assumptions and limits
- All emissions factors are user-entered scenario values in kg CO₂e per kg coffee or per kWh.
- Production, transport, and packaging factors are applied to the entered coffee mass; waste increases that material mass only.
- Brewing electricity is represented by a supplied kWh estimate and electricity factor.
- The boundary excludes milk, sugar, water treatment, equipment manufacture, refrigeration, transport by the consumer, and end-of-life unless those effects are folded into the entered factors.
- The defaults are illustrative starting values, not a claim about every farm, package, appliance, grid, or country.
- Carbon-equivalent accounting is a planning comparison and not a complete environmental assessment.
