Formula and methodology
Formula: CV = 100 sample standard deviation / sample mean.
The coefficient of variation expresses sample spread relative to a positive mean. It is useful for comparing relative variability across scales, but it becomes unstable or misleading when the mean is near zero or the measurement scale has no meaningful zero.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Sample values — Enter 2-1,000 finite numbers separated by commas or spaces.
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Sample values | 8, 10, 12 |
Mean 10, sample standard deviation 2, coefficient of variation 20%.
Assumptions and limits
- The values are comparable observations and the sample standard deviation uses n-1 in the denominator.
- The sample mean must be positive for this contract.
- No weighting, missing-value imputation, or distributional claim is applied.
