Formula and methodology
Formula: Ideal velocity = √(2gh); ideal flow = area×√(2gh); discharge coefficient Cd = measured flow/ideal flow.
The coefficient compares measured flow with the ideal gravity-driven orifice estimate and exposes the assumed head.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Measured flow rate — m³/s; minimum 0; maximum 1000000
- Opening area — m²; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Hydraulic head — m; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Measured flow rate | 0.1 |
| Opening area | 0.05 |
| Hydraulic head | 0.5 |
Cd ≈ 0.638.
Assumptions and limits
- Flow rate is nonnegative, area and head are positive SI quantities.
- The gravitational acceleration is fixed at 9.80665 m/s².
- Viscosity, contraction, turbulence, cavitation, pipe losses, and geometry-specific standards are not modeled.
