Formula and methodology
Formula: Final dimension = wet dimension × (1 − linear shrinkage/100); final rectangular volume = final length × final width × final height; volume ratio = (1 − linear shrinkage/100)³.
The calculator applies one stated linear shrinkage percentage independently to each dimension. Under the simple uniform model, volume shrinks by the cube of the remaining linear fraction, which is why a 10% linear change is not a 10% volume change.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Wet length — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Wet width — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Wet height or thickness — mm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 1000000
- Linear shrinkage — %; minimum 0; maximum 99.999999
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Wet length | 200 |
| Wet width | 120 |
| Wet height or thickness | 10 |
| Linear shrinkage | 10 |
Each dimension becomes 90% of its wet value: 180 × 108 × 9 mm, with a final-to-initial volume ratio of 72.9%.
Assumptions and limits
- The entered percentage is a uniform linear shrinkage applied equally in the three displayed directions.
- The object is represented as a rectangular solid and remains geometrically similar while shrinking.
- Drying and firing stages, clay body, moisture gradient, warping, cracking, glaze, and measured batch behavior are not inferred.
- Use a tested shrinkage value for the actual clay body before relying on a finished-size plan.
