Formula and methodology
Formula: Inner radius r = waist circumference/(2πf); cut radius R = r + finished length + allowance; sector fabric area = fπ(R² − r²), where f is the circle fraction.
A circle skirt is modeled as an annular sector. The waist measurement becomes the inner arc, while the finished length and cutting allowance extend the outer radius. The selected fraction makes the same geometry useful for full-, half-, and quarter-circle layouts.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Waist circumference — cm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Finished skirt length — cm; minimum 1.0E-6; maximum 100000
- Cutting allowance at hem — cm; minimum 0; maximum 10000
- Circle fraction — 3 choices
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Waist circumference | 72 |
| Finished skirt length | 60 |
| Cutting allowance at hem | 3 |
| Circle fraction | 1 |
A full-circle layout has an inner radius of about 11.46 cm, a cut radius of about 74.46 cm, and an ideal sector area of about 20,084 cm².
Assumptions and limits
- The waist measurement is the arc length at the inner edge of the selected circular sector.
- The skirt has a constant radial length and is laid out as one ideal annular sector; grain, seams, panels, and fabric width are not modeled.
- The allowance is added radially at the outer edge and does not represent every seam or hem construction.
- The result is a cutting estimate, not a garment fit, fabric-width, pattern-placement, or sewing-safety recommendation.
