Formula and methodology
Formula: Churn rate=customers lost/customers at start×100; simple retention=100−churn rate.
The denominator is explicitly the starting customer count and the retained percentage is its complement.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Customers at period start — minimum 1; maximum 1000000000
- Customers lost — minimum 0; maximum 1000000000
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Customers at period start | 1000 |
| Customers lost | 80 |
Churn =8%; simple retention =92%.
Assumptions and limits
- Customer counts are whole numbers, losses are nonnegative, and losses do not exceed starting customers.
- The period and customer definition are consistent.
- New customers, expansion, reactivation, cohort differences, and revenue churn are not modeled.
