Formula and methodology
Formula: Transposed root pitch class = (original root pitch class + semitone shift) modulo 12; chord quality is held constant.
A chord transposition moves the complete pitch-class structure by one interval. Keeping the quality unchanged makes the operation transparent: only the root changes, while the major, minor, suspended, diminished, augmented, or seventh template remains the same.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Original chord root — 12 choices
- Chord quality — 8 choices
- Transpose by — semitones; minimum -48; maximum 48
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Original chord root | C |
| Chord quality | major |
| Transpose by | 2 |
C major transposes to D major
Assumptions and limits
- The input is a common chord quality represented without a fixed register.
- The shift is an integer number of equal-tempered semitones applied to every chord tone.
- Key-signature spelling, voice leading, capo positions, tuning, and register are not modeled.
