Formula and methodology
Formula: Move the lowest note of the root-position ordered chord above the remaining notes once for each inversion step; the pitch classes remain unchanged.
An inversion changes which chord tone is in the bass without changing the chord's root or quality. The calculator returns an ordered pitch-class spelling with octave lifts shown as repeated note names in the new bass-to-top order.
This result follows the calculator's declared inputs, precision, validation boundaries, and model limits.
Input contract
- Chord root — 12 choices
- Chord quality — 9 choices
- Inversion number — 4 choices
Worked example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Chord root | C |
| Chord quality | major |
| Inversion number | 1 |
First inversion: E, G, C (bass E)
Assumptions and limits
- The chord is a closed-position triad or seventh-chord template from the supported quality list.
- Each inversion moves one lowest chord tone up one octave; exact register numbers are not displayed.
- Voice leading, doubled tones, omitted tones, open spacing, and instrument range are not modeled.
